Rescue of the critically endangered long-stalked pondweed (Potamogeton praelongus) in the Czech Republic.
Original language description
Potamogeton praelongus recently occurs in the Czech Republic at the only natural site in the Orlice river floodplain near Hradec Králové. A new artificial site nearby in an oxbow of the Orlice river was established in 2008. Other micropopulations were established in backwater pools in the Protected Landscape Kokořínsko in Central Bohemia in 2003-2005. Micropopulations of P. praelongus increased their size (number of colonies, shoots) in 2008-2010. All tests of germination indicated the necessity of disturbation of seed testa as the key requirement for breaking seed dormancy. Using the combined effect of NaClO on germination stimulation and seed sterilisation, sterile in-vitro culture has been prepared and 30 new clones with an expected genetic variability are available.
