Original language description
Study of social insects in the context of sociobiology and behavioral analogies with human societies is an attractive theme (e.g. Soudek 1924; Wilson 1971). Our interest is focused on the other feature of an important insect group facilitating the development of cultural landcape with traditional agriculture going through changes at present. Grassland vegetation structure in relation to the activity of ants was studied in the same area as the other data were collected and presented in this book - in thesurroundings of Sfânta Elena (see Chapters 5.2, 5.3). The mentioned chapters of our book show the present variability of local grasslands starting with abandoned fields, pastures or mown meadows and ending with dry or wet seminatural stands including grazed orchards.
