    This paper is covering selected issues of contemporary welfare state modernization and some of its relationships to social work. Welfare state modernization is broadly discussed topic today. Contemporary process of transition of socio-economic situationin Europe is producing several risks for the future. The overall purpose of this paper is to present some selected topics concerning modernization, which are actually discussed not only in the Czech Republic. So the paper is discussing common modernization trends in welfare states (and social work as its part) like shift towards governance model of creation and implementation of social policy, re-commodification, cost-containment etc.
