Importance of subjective health for the perception of seniors autonomy
Original language description
Personal autonomy and its respect is the right of every human being in every period of his life. The objective of this scientific work is to answer the question how the seniors see themselves as autonomous persons, namely in the physical and financial terms and in the term of self-sufficiency within the meaning of individual decision. Most of the scientific works on senior population deal with elderly people in the institutional care or with seniors, who are dependent on the care of others. Our message is focused on seniors living in the natural environment (family) with the aim to map the self-concept and the opinions of relatively self-sufficient, but very large groups of seniors, who we meet on the streets nowadays and probably will meet them more often in the future. Scientific aim. The aim of the research was to assess the perceived autonomy among the seniors themselves, namely in terms of physical self-sufficiency. The aim was not to create the statistical data analysis and hypothesis testing, but mapping the significance of subjective health for the perceived autonomy among the seniors themselves. Findings, conclusion. Senior´s subjective health is influenced by a number of factors. In addition to an active approach to health (active ageing as a part of a life-style), it is essential to point out the importance of psychosocial factors as a necessary part of elderly care. This finding could influence the focus on providing social services; underline the necessity of reflection and the acceptance of psychosocial care of seniors. As far as this context is concern informal caregivers play an important role of social support as one of the moderators of senior´s health.
