The paper describes the process of migrating the Czech Academic backbone from LAN emulation to Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). The network is large enough to serve as a proof of the MPLS concept. After explaining the reasons for this migration, thenational ATM network topology is described During the practical deployment, several problems (mainly software bugs) of varying severity were observed which are classified into four main categories in the paper. It is concluded that MPLS is a viable technology even though its deployment in large backbone networks with heavy traffic may still be rather troublesome with many serious problems that do not show up in laboratory or other experimental setups.
