Performance limits of 10Gbit/s transmission over standard single mode fibre (SMF) without the deployment of in-line erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA's) are evaluated by means of numerical simulation. The fibre system was modelled using the standard split-step Fourier algorithm for the solution of non-linear Schröedinger equation.
