The overlay networks with virtual resources need new forms of monitoring
Original language description
In the paper we describe our experience with developing a monitoring system for FEDERICA network. We describe the whole concept and possibilities of getting basic I/O statistics from different layers of the network. From the monitoring point of view, themain problem of virtual systems is its multidimensionality and variability. Structure is randomly changing according the users demands. The VMware ESX Server-3i hypervisor was originally dedicated for simple and small systems. The FEDERICA low-budget experimental project selected it as a base tool for virtualization environment. It creates several problems to monitor resources located in virtual nodes. It required a replacement of standard SNMP methods with proprietary tools, such as VI Performance tool, RCLI from VMware and monitoring the network via external devices as Flowmon probes. In the paper we describe actual status of our system and present some results from the monitoring of real traffic in FEDERICA network.
