Effects of reflections in present optical networks with bidirectional transmissions
Original language description
Reflections are considered not to be so critical factor in today optical networks. Optical amplifiers and transmitting lasers have in-built optical isolators suppressing fibre reflections and Rayleigh backscattering. The only critical factor is then double Rayleigh scattering which had negative impact on optical to signal to noise ratio. But new applications transmitting very accurate or stable quantities it is necessary to use bidirectional optical paths. This provides new opportunities both in research and practical deployment.
