Transplantation of Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Physeal Defects in the Prevention of Bone Bridge Formation in Pigs
Original language description
Following a trauma, the capacity of the growth plate to regenerate tends to decrease. Evaluating the capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to heal defects in the injured physis is one of the current issues of contemporary research. Our study draws ona successful experiment with similar objectives which was previously carried out on the model of a New Zealand white rabbit. Long-term research included a group of 10 miniature pigs: allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells were transplanted into an iatrogenically-induced defect in the lateral section of the distal physis of the left femur. The right femur with the same defect in the distal physis, but without transplanted stem cells, served as a control. To transfer MSCs, a recently developed porous scaffoldwas used, based on collagen and chitosan, constituting a compact tube into which MSCs were implanted. The pigs were euthanized 4 months after the transplantation.
