Aseptic meningitis during acute hepatitis E – a single center experience

  • Original language description

The epidemiological characteristics of the hepatitis E virus have changed over recent years. Its presence in industrialized countries and zoonotic transmission have become basic characteristics of the disease. Moreover, numerous extra-hepatic symptoms of the infection have been described recently. We present two rare cases of central nervous system involvement (aseptic meningitis) in immunocompetent patients with acute hepatitis E confirmed by detection of hepatitis E virus RNA in the serum. In one case the virus was detected in the cerebrospinal fluid. Both cases were treated using glucocorticoids till the improvement of initial symptoms.
