Hypertrophy in fishponds results in weaker top-down effect of fish stock nad less efficient fish productivity

  • Original language description

In the 20th century fish production in the Czech fishponds has increased remarkably and in the 1980ties reached a stable level of about 600 kg.ha-1. At the same time most of fishponds became eutrophic as a result of nutrients inflow from the catchment aswell as fertilizers and fish feed applied directly to the fishponds. Although the fish production has stayed at the same level till nowadays, the increase of fishpond eutrophication still lasts. Management of higher fish stock densities accompanied by higher nutrient loads results in the massive development of algal and cyanobacterial blooms. Enormously high primary production of phytoplankton was found as well. Decrease in ratio between primary and fish production in the last decades proves low efficiency of production processes. The aim of this study is to prove the changes in fishpond food web functioning in the conditions of hypertrophic fishponds and loss of efficiency of energy and matter transport from phytoplankton through zoo.
