The effect that introduced Pinus mugo (dwarf pine) is having on butterflies at isolated alpine sites in the High Sudetes Mts. (Kralicky Sneznik and Hruby Jesenik Mts.) was determined. These sites are unique island habitats for a number of relict and endemic species and their colonization by the non-indigenous Pinus mugo might eventually cause a loss of suitable habitats for butterfly species of high conservation importance. In this study, the association of butterfly species richness and abundance withthe extent of Pinus mugo cover at individual alpine sites was determined. The results of a similarity analysis indicate significant differences in community composition and the Generalized Linear Model clearly demonstrates that even a relatively low density of Pinus mugo might cause a significant decrease in abundance of Erebia species.
