Eger Rift ICDP: an observatory for study of non-volcanic, mid-crustal earthquake swarms and accompanying phenomena
Original language description
The West Bohemia (Czech Republic) and the Vogtland (Germany) regions face the earthquake swarm seismicity and large-scale diffuse degassing of mantle-derived CO2. The ICDP Eger Rift aims to develop the most modern, comprehensive observatory worldwide forthe study of these earthquake swarms processes and CO2 degassing in order to reach a new level of high frequency, near source, and multi-parameter observation of earthquake swarms and related phenomena. Such a laboratory will comprise a network of a high frequency 3D seismic array with a set of five to six shallow boreholes with the aim to address the key scientific questions related to the swarm processes and processes of fluid flow in the crust.
