Magnetovariational studies of Lake Ladoga crustal conductivity anomaly: from discovery in 70th to understanding of its spatial behaviour and deep structure on modern observations

  • Original language description

The paper presents the results of electromagnetic soundings in the area of Ladoga conductivity anomaly, which marks AR-PR border at the Southeastern Fennoscandian Shield. The investigations were started by pioneering discovery of this anomaly by just invented magnetovariational profiling and continue today on the base of modern data acquisition and analyses technologies to provide more reliable and detailed information on the regional geoelectric structure to constrain geological models. We focus on the results of magnetovariational studies: prospecting and long-period synchronous soundings of 2013-2015 years along Vyborg-Suoyarvi profile crossing the anomaly, and long-period observations of 2016 year at NE and SE of Ladoga Lake. Methodological aspects of new field experiment, noise-suppressing data processing, invariant analyses and interpretation procedures are discussed. The deep architecture of the anomaly and crustal conductor spatial behaviour are revealed by 2D magnetovariational data inversion at Vyborg-Suoyarvi line and quasi-3D thin-sheet inversion of regional induction vector ensemble integrating new data of Ladoga WG and similar data at the adjacent Finnish territory. The resolution of Lake Ladoga anomaly cross-section as well as its tracing to SE of the area, supported by elaborated regional prognostic 3D geoelectric model, permit to interpret the EM sounding results in geotectonic terms.
