Constrained moment tensors: source models and case studies
Original language description
The moment tensor (MT) has become a standard for describing seismic sources, both in earthquake seismology and for various types of induced seismicity. In its full generality, it however is not always useful because of troubles with its reliable reconstruction from poor monitoring geometries, noisy data, inexact velocity/attenuating model etc. In practice, it is advantageous to constrain it with the aim to stabilize the inverse task. Commonly applied deviatoric constraint is however not optimum, especially in induced seismicity where volume changes in the focus are expected. The shear-tensile crack – a combination of a shear slip and opening/closing of the fault is a preferable source model, as it allows a volume change, and yields robust solutions of the inverse task.n
