Incidence of Diabetes Mellitus Narrowly Correlates with Unemployment Rate during 2000–2012 in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

We use the GAM (generalized additive model) framework to investigate the relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) incidence and unemployment rate across different regions of the Czech Republic, adjusting carefully for trend and regional effects as nuissance variables. After the adjustment, it turns out that the relationship of DM to the unemployment rate is clearly detectable. While the large-scale studies of this type are not common, our results are in line with conclusions of research based on different methodology and focused sampling.
