The pre- versus post-main sequence evolutionary phase of B[e] stars. Constraints from 13CO band emission
Original language description
The many similarities between pre-main sequence (Herbig) stars and evolved supergiant stars hamper proper stellar classifications of galactic B[e] objects significantly. We propose a new classification characetristic to distinguish these two groups unambiguously, based on the appearance of 13CO band emission. We show that the detection of 13CO band head emission in medium-resolution K-band spectra of B[e] stars is an immediate proof for an evolved (supergiant) nature of the star.
