Transition to digital meteor spectra - a study in progress
Original language description
With the evolution of technology, digital sensors replaced photographic plates and films previously used in cameras for the acquisition of meteor spectra. During the transition phase, both recording methods were operative. Several fireball spectra captured from both analogue and digital cameras were used for comparison. Details of the complete analysis procedure are discussed, starting with obtaining the observed spectral information from the image, up to the synthetic fit of the spectrum used to determine the instrumental response of the observing system. The spectra of two meteors captured by the analogue camera and several digital cameras are compared using the newly-developed SynthFit software, to determine measurement errors and other discrepancies. From the results, it was found that the spectral sensitivity of the analogue cameras was wrongly determined at short wavelengths. Applying different scaling factors along the spectral range to account for it, the relative intensities of nearby lines are mostly in good agreement with spectra captured from different stations. Other differences in the analysed spectra of a fast meteor most likely arise from an unprecise continuum identification and better results can be expected after performing the physical fit.
