Adhesion and proliferation of rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) on polyethylene implanted with O(+) and C(+) ions.
Original language description
Polyethylene (PE) was irradiated with 30-keV oxygen or 23 keV carbon ions (doses 1013 to 5x1015 ions-cm2). This treatment increased wettability, oxidation and carbon content in the material surface. Adhesion of vascular smooth muscle cells to the modified PE was improved, whereas the proliferation of these cells was attenuated. Ion-irradiated PE can be used for tissue engineering where high initial densities, low subsequent proliferation, and high differentiation are desirable, e.g. for vascular prostheses.
