The Candida albicans Na(+)/H(+) antiporter exports potassium and rubidium.

Result description

Heterologous expression of the C. albicans CNH1 gene in S. cerevisiae revealed the broad substrate specificity of encoded transport system. Cnh1p transports besides toxic sodium and lithium also rubidium and potassium. The Cnh1p-mediated K+ efflux couldbe involved in the regulation of intracellular pH and cell volume.
