Cardiac function, microvascular structure, and capillary hematocrit in hearts of polycythemic rats.

  • Original language description

Chronic polycythemia induced by cobalt treatment in rats had an increased coronary capillary and arteriolar supply. Polycythemia induced by erythropoietin injections did not change coronary microvascular bed. Therefore, a hypoxic stimulus appears to be more effective in inducing angiogenesis than mechanical stimuli.
