Biological effects of selenium compounds with a particular attention to the ontogenetic development
Original language description
Toxicity of selenium (Se) depends besides the chemical form, state of organism, interactions with of heavy metals, on the stage of ontogenetic development. Young rats survive the dose of Se, that is lethal in adult rats. However, the same dose of Se induces in young rats the cataract of eye lenses. The incidence of cataract may be suppressed by premature weaning, lower hydration of sucklings, change of water soluble/insoluble lens proteins ratio, thyroxine treatment, and by interaction with mercury. AsSe is involved in the maintanence of cell redox state, the cardioprotective effect was observed after ischemia/reperfusion injury
