Palaeomagnetism and geochemistry of Early Palaeozoic rocks of the Barrandian (Teplá-Barrandian Unit, Bohemian Massif):palaeotectonic implications.

  • Original language description

During the Early Palaeozoic an extensional tectonic setting related to large-scale fragmentation of NW Gondwana and separation of Armorican microcontinent assemblage prevailed in the Teplá-Barrandian Unit. Barrandian was engaged in a peri-equatorially oriented drift of the Armorican assemblage from 58 S (Middle Cambrian) to 17 S (Middle Devonian). According to chemical data, Cambrian siliciclastics originated from an early Cadomian volcanic island arc, Ordovician and Early Silurian siliciclastics were derived from progressively dissected Cadomian crust of continental arc/active continental margin type and since the Late Ordovician onwards synsedimentary basic volcanics contributed. Latest Early Silurian to Early Devonian limestone suite indicates long-term withdrawal of the Cadomian clastic source and Givetian flysch-like suite accounts for a reappearance of the Cadomian source due to early Variscan convergences and collisions of the Armorican microcontinents.
