The first record of Ferroranina (Decapoda, Raninoidia, Palaeocorystidae) from Europe

  • Original language description

A nineteenth century record of a palaeocorystid crab from the Lower Middle Coniacian of Březno (Czech Republic) has been reassessed, the single, well-preserved dorsal carapace with conspicuous cuticular morphology fungiform nodes, distinct tfilobate post-frontal terrace, medially defined cervical groove with V-shaped medial portion) favours transfer to the genus Ferroranina VAN BAKU, GLINOT, ARTAL, FRAAUE & JAGT, 2012. Previous records of the genus comprise three species from the Upper Cretaceous of southern India, Madagascar and Texas (USA). The Czech specimen constitutes the fourth known member of the genus and simultaneously the first record of Ferroranina from Europe, thereby considerably extending the previously known geographical distribution of the genus during the Cretaceous. Potential migration routes of the genus to the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin are also discussed.
