Various approaches to the grain size estimation are reviewed and discussed in relation to the results of computer simulations covering a wide range of spatial tessellations. Moreover, empirical relations between variances and coefficients of variation ofthe original 3D tessellation and 2D, 1D tessellations induced by it are examined.
