Extraction of Phytosterols from Tall Oil Soap Using Selected Organic Solvents
Original language description
The aim of this laboratory study was to compare yields of phytosterols when several extraction solvents were used. Hexane, limonene, 2-methylpropan-1-ol, hexan-1-ol, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl tert-butyl ether and butyl ethanoate were tested. For hydrocarbons addition of de-emulsifier into the system (reduction of interfacial tension) was necessary. The highest yields were obtained with 2-methylpropan-1-ol ? 67 % of total sterols and 89 % of ?-sitosterol. Disadvantages of most of the tested solventsincluded the formation of the undesirable stable solid interphase, their partial solubility in water phase, high boiling point and/or instability. These properties complicate the treatment of tall oil soap by liquid-liquid extraction or the regenerationof the used organic solvent.
