Stabilized Sewage Sludge Pyrolysis in Inert and Water Vapor Enhanced Atmospheres.

  • Original language description

Sewage sludge is a significant source of phosphorus, listed as one of the critical raw materials in the European Union. Therefore, appropriate sewage sludge treatment should be chosen to attain optimal recycling of nutrients from the sludge. One of the most common options for the sludge disposal is its application on agricultural soil. In recent years, however, due to contents of POPs, various pharmaceuticals and harmful organic residues, there is ban on sludge disposal in agriculture. Alternatively, the sludge pyrolysis has been studied to dispose the sludge with possible subsequent use of solid pyrolysis residue (sludge-char) on soil. Due to thermal nature of pyrolysis process, the organic pollutants are decomposed and/or released from the solids, resulting in their significantly lower content. Because moisture is inherent part of sewage sludge, resulting in water vapor rich primary pyrolysis gas (mixture of condensable vapors and permanent gases), we studied the pyrolytic process of air dried, stabilized sewage sludge in helium inert atmosphere and the pyrolysis with the inert atmosphere enriched in water vapor. The main variable parameters of the pyrolysis were temperature and partial pressure of water vapor in the reactor. Results from the measurements enable comparison of mass and energy balances of the sludge pyrolysis experiments.
