5 Ni-Free Hydrogenation of Natural Products for the Personal Care Industry: Case Study, Squalene Hydrogenation. Chapter 5.
Original language description
A number of key components in formulating personal care products are based on oils and fats from plant-based sources. These products are increasingly attractive for consumers when compared to petrochemical-based ingredients. Many of these products are obtained by the hydrogenation of an unsaturated natural product, which was produced from a refining process of a vegetable oil. These hydrogenation processes are typically carried out in batch reactors using Ni-based catalysts. The replacement of this batch process with a continuous system that is Ni free would provide safer and cheaper products. This chapter shows how finding a novel stable catalyst is crucial for the new process.
