Optimization of a selective fragmentation process for the improvement of copper recovery in the incineration bottom ash fine fraction

  • Original language description

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) has proven to be a suitable technology for the management of the municipal solid waste (MSW). Moreover, the incineration bottom ash (IBA), a by product of the incineration process, has also been proven as a secondary source of valuable elements such as copper. This study proposes the development and optimization of a liberation treatment based on the combination of magnetic and milling processes to improve the quality of the concentrate product obtained by a wet shaking table treatment of the fraction between 1 to 2 mm fraction. The results showed that there was no significant increase in the copper grade of the dense non-magnetic product after the nproposed liberation treatment, but it was possible to recover a fraction of the embedded copper after the liberation treatment of the magnetic product. The best results were obtained by using a 200 micronssieve. In addition, the milling time resulted in a relevant parameter due to its high energy consumption.
