    Gypsum is a widely used material in a variety of industries, especially construction, agriculture and manufacturing. Traditionally, coal-fired power plants have been one of the main sources of synthetic gypsum through flue gas desulphurisation. However, with the gradual phase-out and closure of these plants due to stricter environmental policies and the transition to renewable energy, there is an urgent need to secure alternative sources of gypsum. Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants can serve as that alternative source for gypsum recovery. Typically, gypsum is recovered from MSWI plants equipped with wet or semi-dry flue gas treatment systems using calcium-based compounds for desulphurisation. In contrast, this study focuses on gypsum recovery in MSWI plants where sodium-based compounds (specifically, sodium hydroxide) is used for desulphurisation. The study summarises the results of laboratory experiments and their semi-pilot plant verification in a real MSWI plant. It discusses the properties of the recovered products, the technological and economic challenges and the future prospects for application.
