First, the lecture outlines the prospective trends in city mass transportation. In further sections, principles of electric traction drives are discussed. As the lecture is intended for broad technical audience not specialized in power electronics, onlythe most elementary principles of converters are explained. Their improvement is based on the employment of IGBTs and IGCTs, which are the state-of-the-art semiconductor power switching devices.
