First experimental experience with new laboratory slurry loop
Original language description
In 2009, an experimental loop for slurry-pipe tests was reconstructed at the Institute of Hydrodynamics in Prague. The two new radiometric devices use a collimated beam of gamma-ray to measure the local average density in a horizontal plane at specifiedheight above pipe bottom. Shifting the beam makes it possible to acquire vertical concentration profile of solids in a pipe cross section. This information comes together with the information on the flow rate, hydraulic gradient and delivered concentration. In 2010, first experiments were conducted with the mixture of water and glass particles. The results are compared with the predictions using the model by Pugh and Wilson and the model proposed by the authors. When slightly refined, both models exhibit a satisfactory match. Our first experience with the new radiometric device is summarized showing benefits and limitations of the used radiometric method for sensing concentration distributions in pipe flows of settling slurries.
