Volumetric mass transfer coefficient in the gas-liquid contactor agitated by Rushton turbines of various diameters in non-coalescent batch

  • Original language description

Mass transfer based processes are emerging in the biobased, chemical and food industry. For the processes with the gas-liquid mass transfer rate as the controlling factor, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient,kLa,becomes the indispensable parameter. At the moment the volumetric mass transfer coefficient is commonly predicted on the base of literature correlations. Applicationof many correlations is limited by way of their development (some of the correlation were established just only for one vessel size or one ratio between impeller diameter and vessel diameter). With an intent to create an appropriate correlation for kLaprediction in non-coalescent batch the extensive experimental dataset was measured by Dynamic pressure method (DPM) which have been demonstrated to be physicallycorrect in the past.nOur previous works aimed at the kLadependencies in a viscousand the coalescent batch result in appropriate correlations that are viable for examined process conditions. Our next target is to describe the relationship between various impeller diameters and transport characteristic (mainlykLa) in the non-coalescenttype of the batch. The experiments were carried out in a multiple-impellervessel equippedwith Rushton turbines (of several diameters) and in both, laboratory and pilot-plant scale. Variousimpeller frequencies and gas flow rateswere used for experiments. The experimentbased correlation for kLaprediction in the non-coalescentbatch is presented, which can be used inthe industrialdesign of gas-liquid contactors operating with non-coalescent batch.
