A field trial study on long-term effects of organic farming on the retention of plant available soil water

  • Original language description

Due to an enrichment of soil organic carbon and a stimulation of soil biological activity, organic agriculture has the potential to increase water infiltration and soil water retention as compared to conventional agriculture. A field-trial study was commenced in order to compare a 15-year-old organic farming system to a conventional farming system with respect to retention of plant available soil water. In 2023 and 2024, soil hydraulic properties and soil organic carbon content are determined three times per year. In order to unravel the sources of plant available water, the isotopic composition of soil water is bimonthly determined. The volumetric soil water content is continuously recorded. Preliminary data indicate a higher volumetric soil water content for the organic farming system in comparison to the conventional system, but no differences between the systems for soil water retention and soil organic carbon content. For robust results with statistical validation, further data and analyses need to be waited for.
