Fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor with a fiber Bragg grating.

  • Original language description

We report a new optical sensor based on excitation of a surface plasmon (SP) in an optical fiber Bragg grating structure. A side-polished single-mode optical fiber with an intracore Bragg grating is covered by a thin gold overlayer supporting SP. Coupling between the fiber guided mode and analyte's refractive index sensitive SP affects fiber mode attenuation. A laboratory prototype of the sensor with sensitivity to analyte refractive index is as high as 750 dB per refractive index unit has been developed.
