The role of optical layer in next generation networks.
Original language description
The uderlying physical infrastructure of next generation networks will consist of a transparent ultra-high capacity optical transmission network core while in the access part of the networks the transmission media will remain hybrid. Multiplicity of network operators and services will require flexible reconfigurable networks providing bandwidth on demand. The optical network will be intelligent employing wavelength routing with a control mechanism for seetting up and taking down all-optical connections.
