Coupling between Fano and Bragg Bands in Photonic Band Structure of Two-Dimensional Metallic Photonic Structures

  • Original language description

We explore numerically effects associated with synergetic interplay between the microscopic and macroscopic resonance mechanisms in the frequency and transmission spectrum of two-dimensional array of metallic rods embedded in a vacuum. Likewise in the band structure of 2D photonic crystal with dielectric rods [P. Markoš, Phys. Rev. A 92 043814 (2015)] one can distinguish in the spectrum of periodic array of the metallic cylinders two types of bands, those associated with macroscopic Bragg-like multiple scattering arising from the periodicity: Bragg P bands and the Fano F bands arising from single scatterer Mie resonances and analyze a correspondence between a series of flat F bands and Fano resonances excited in a linear array of metallic rods and on an isolated metallic cylinder by an incident H-polarized electromagnetic wave. We found that the existence of the Fano band at a certain frequency range is manifested by a Fano resonance in the transmittance. A different character of both kinds of bands is reflected in spatial distribution of the EM field which is governed by characteristic patterns corresponding to relevant symmetry representations. Obtained results are compared with recent results of numerical analysis
