Relation between crack geometrical parameters, fracture toughness and rock microstructure investigated using X-ray computed tomography
Original language description
In this contribution, the initial results of the study of the influence of rock microstructure and composition on the fracture toughness (FT) of rocks measured by the chevron bend (CB) test and subsequent analysis of cracks geometry using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) are presented. A total of 10 different types of rocks, mostly sandstones, were used for this testing. On the basis of laboratory experiments, the following conclusions can be made: (1) the value of crack length generally increases with decreasing rock porosity, (2) the value of crack length generally increases with increasing value of fracture toughness, (3) the value of the crack length of sandstones increases with a growing degree rock matrix silicification, (4) in porous rocks like sandstones, the crack propagation goes preferably throughout the pore space, and (5) in low-porosity crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks, the cracks spread along grain bound-naries and often also break mineral grains.
