Electromagnetic anomalies are among a range of enigmatic phenomena associated with large seismic events and it has long been suggested that such signals could be used for short term earthquake forecasting. Here we describe an electromagnetic monitoring system that has been designed to record rock strain induced electromagnetic radiation. Our initial results – recorded next to an active tectonic fault in Obir Caves in Austria – are promising: low energy impulses are often observed around the time of regional seismic events. Future research efforts will focus on recording the signals generated during a series of point load tests conducted in the field as well as long term monitoring in the quartz rich sandstones that host Cyrilka Cave in the Czech Republic. Further progress, however, hinges on the application of suitable machine learning approaches so that we are able to extract all the information concealed within our large datasets. Nonetheless, given the dominance of lightning signals and the significant influence of rock mineral composition, it seems unlikely that electromagnetic anomalies alone – whether recorded in caves or at the surface – could ever be reliably used for earthquake forecasting.
