Metabolic state of the sow, nursing behaviour and milk production.
Original language description
Twenty-one sows were studied to investigate if lactating sow metabolism relates to behaviour and piglet performance. We conclude that catabolism increases during the first 3 weeks of lactation, there is some association between sow metabolism and behaviour and the ability of a sow to turn catabolic soon after parturition decreases piglet mortality risk.
