The Alps as barrier to dispersal in cold-adapted freshwater fishes? Phylogeographic history and taxonomic status of the bullhead in the Adriatic freshwater drainage

  • Original language description

The freshwater faunas of the Italian peninsula are isolated from the rest of Europe by the geographic barrier of the Alps and consequently have developed many endemic forms and contain few non-endemic species. One of the case where the situation is not clear is the problem of freshwater fish populations of the genus Cottus. There are two hypetheses against each other: one stands for endemic species Cottus ferrugineus, while the other says that the Cottus populations in Italian peninsula are recent invadors from the adjacent drainages and hence belong to the widespread Cottus gobio. To test these two hypotheses against each other, we studied the origin and phylogenetic relationships of bullheads, cold adapted freshwater fishes of the genus Cottus, fromboth sides of the Alps and Dinaric Mountains.

Alpy jakožto migrační bariéra v šíření chladnomilných sladkovodních ryb? Fylogeografie a taxonomický status vranek v povodí Jaderského moře

  • Czech description

Připustíme-li tuto variantu, pak musíme předpokládat, že Cottus gobio invadoval do řek Apeninského systému přes bariéru Alp, jedno z nejvyšších rozvodí v Evropě. Tyto dvě hypotézy jsme testovali pomocí molekulárních markerů (control region mtDNA), které nám poskytly přehled genealogických vztahů populací vranek z Apeninského poloostrova a z přilahlých oblastí Evropy.
