Large Animal Models of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Original language description

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson and Huntington disease are caused or accompanied by a major loss of neurons. A slow progression of the diseases allows treat symptoms with new pharmaceuticals, to develop cell transplantation therapies and to invent molecular genetic approaches. Before all new promising therapies will be accessible for patients, appropriate animal models are critical for understanding the fundamental mechanisms causing the diseases and for development of safety andefficient therapeutic approaches. In this respect large animal models, with a close physiology to human brain, are extremely important.
