Original language description
Emerging evidences suggest an important effect of the human gut microbiome on the central nervous system and its possible role in mental disorders. Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness, which is among the leading causes of disability, morbidity, and mortality worldwide. Despite the enormous effort, the underlying mechanism associated with disease pathogenesis and progression is not fully understood. The potential role of intestinal microbiota in the etiology of this mental disorder has attracted growing attention in recent years.
