From punch cards to virtual space. Changing the concept of archaeological heritage management in the digital age
Original language description
The aim of this article is to demonstrate with the case study of the Neolithic site of Bylany in the Czech Republic the transformation of a large-scale and long-term archaeological project into a sustainable heritage management concept. This includes thepreservation and dissemination of archaeological data as well as the creation of virtual spaces for the public and the archaeologists alike. After brief introduction of the site and project and its ground breaking use of a code-like system in the 1960swhich allowed analyzing the data semi-automatically by punch cards, the article will contextualize a new research strategy with the new State Heritage Law of the Czech Republic and outline the potential of digital heritage including a 3D virtual museum of the site and the Neolithic culture which will comprise a digital catalogue along with a GIS map of the site, open access of 3D scans of artefacts and virtual reconstructions of Neolithic settlement, architecture and circular enclosures.
