Swords uncovered at the burial ground of the Stará Kouřim stronghold (9th century) from the perspective of archaeology and metallography

  • Original language description

Two swords found in opulent male Graves 55 and 120 in the burial ground near Libuše pond at the Old Slavonic stronghold of Stará Kouřim belong undoubtedly to the most mysterious weapons of Early Medieval Bohemia. The first sword (from Grave 55), accompanied by a special belt garniture with trefoil belt fittings, does not have a preserved pommel or cross-guard. The second (lifted from Grave 120) is an unusually short two-edged sword with a pattern-welded blade, and also bears no significant typological features. A more detailed determination of the swords is not possible due to their typological indeterminateness, but the archaeological context, in which the weapons were found, is interesting. The swords belonged to the inventory of the most opulent male burials that, in terms of the grave goods largely consisting of imports from distant areas, come from the earlier stages of the use of the burial grounds, i.e. from the first two thirds of the 9th century. Both weapons differ from each
