Early medieval touchstones from Sowinki, Greater Poland
Original language description
Among 150 graves excavated in an early medieval graveyard in Sowinki, Mosina, Greater Poland, five burials were furnished with stone artefacts. The preliminary interpretation understood the artefacts as whetstones. Using an electron microscope, traces ofnon-ferrous metals, including precious metals, were found on the surface of the stones. In fact, these artefacts are touchstones, tools used to test the quality of precious metal. In the article, the question of the social status of the deceased personsis addressed. The age of the individuals could be determined in three of the five burials: all of them were children or adolescents.
