The Neolithic site of Bylany (Czech Republic): past, present and near future of a long-term archaeological project
Original language description
The aim of this article is to provide an insight into the development of research strategies and perception of a particular Neolithic settlement area. The archaeological field excavations in Bylany near Kutná Hora started in the 1950s and awakened professional interest regarding the research of settlement areas of the first farmers in central Europe (i.e. Linear Pottery culture or LBK). The field activities and subsequent processing of finds have produced numerous studies that have had a significant impact on the excavation methodology utilized at Neolithic sites and the analysis of archaeological material for this and other time periods. Archaeological heritage management in the region and ongoing analyses of the huge amount of data are the immediatefuture of the Bylany project. A successful grant application is being used to deal with three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of the artifacts and creating a large web-based and open-access thesaurus of the virtual Neolithic object collection.
