Original language description
The book discuss in detail sword-finds from the Great Moravian settlement of Mikulčice, where 16 swords have been discovered in graves, and parts of a further four swords were identified in the settlement material. These are predominantly finds from thephases of large-scale excavations carried out between 1954 and 1992. As a whole, the Mikulčice finds can be quite accurately dated to the Great Moravian period, which correlates with the course of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century. The book begins with brief introductions to the archaeological site, early medieval Mikulčice, and the political unit known as Great Moravia. A brief introduction to the issue of typological assessment of swords is also included. The study continues with descriptions of the swords, their typological determinations and metallographic assessments as well as descriptions of the remains of scabbards, straps and wrappings preserved in the corrosion layers.
