Saint Adalbert of Prague: A (Czech) Site of Memory
Original language description
St Adalbert was an influential personality already in his lifetime and he is reflected in the whole history of the Bohemian lands. In the mid-11th century, he became, next to SS Vitus, Wenceslas, and the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the Prague Cathedral and one of the patrons of the Bohemian lands. In 1039, his remains were brought from Gniezno to Prague and placed in the often-discussed 'Chapel, built as if in the entrance' of then St Vitus' Rotunda. The resting place of the remains of SS Adalbert and Wenceslas became the liturgical axis of this and all subsequent building phases of the cathedral. Numerous works of art, architectural, sculptural, and painted, literature and music are prove to St Adalbert's extreme popularity in the Middle Ages.
