Czech archaeology under communism
Original language description
I discuss the status of archaeology in Czechoslovakia in relation to historic and political events in the aftermath of WWII. The core of my presentation relates to “communist archaeology” and its peculiarities. I examine key political events to see how they relate to the status of archaeology at the time. Consequently, I point out to the overwhelming political control of archaeology in the early years of communism of the late 1940s and the 1950s and relative ease of the political grip in the 1960s, before the Prague Spring of 1968. In the second part of my article, I briefly analyze archaeological theory and especially the evidence of the introduction of other than Marxist-related thoughts such as processual archaeology.
